James P. Basilion, Ph.D.
Inventor, Co-founder
In 1984 Dr. Basilion completed his BA in biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania and entered the doctoral program at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NICHD) and a short career in a Biotech startup, Dr. Basilion joined the Faculty of Harvard Medical School and MGH-Center for Molecular Imaging Research. In September 2005, Dr. Basilion joined the faculties of Medicine and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. There he rose through the ranks and now is a full tenured professor in the Departments of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering and is currently Co-director of the Cancer Imaging Program for the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. Previously he held the roles of the Vice-Chair for Basic Research at the Department of Radiology and the Director of the Case Center for Imaging Research. His research is translational in nature, and he has founded four companies devoted to the development of fluorescence image guided surgery for cancer. He has over 100 publications and over 50 issued/pending patents.
In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Basilion is actively engaged with various professional organizations, including the World Molecular Imaging Society and the Radiological Society of North America, where he continues to contribute to the advancement of medical imaging and cancer research. He is a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors, a Fellow of the World Molecular Imaging Society, and a Fellow of the National Foundation for Cancer Research.

Agata A. Exner, Ph.D.
Inventor, Co-founder
Director of the CWRU Center for Imaging Research and a leading expert in molecular imaging and theranostics.
Agata A. Exner, Ph.D.
Inventor, Co-founder
Dr. Exner is the Director of the CWRU Center for Imaging Research, Henry Willson Payne Professor and Vice Chair for Basic Research in the Department of Radiology, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Exner is an internationally recognized leader in molecular imaging and theranostics – her multidisciplinary research at the interface of nanomedicine and biomedical ultrasound and focuses on development of novel platform technologies for molecular imaging and image-guided drug delivery. Under this umbrella her research group has pioneered the development of long-circulating ultrasound responsive targeted nanobubbles - a versatile platform with potential use as cancer cell specific agents for early disease diagnosis, as companion diagnostics for prediction of tumor heterogeneity and vascular permeability and as cell specific cavitation agents for ultrasound-mediated therapy. Her research has been continuously funded by the NIH for over 20 years. Dr. Exner is an elected Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors, Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and Distinguished Investigator of the Academy of Radiology Research. At CWRU, Dr. Exner is also an Associate Director of the Case Medical Scientist Training Program, and a co-leader of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Cancer Imaging Program.
Michael J. Haag, MS, MBA
Co-founder, Chief Executive Officer
Expert in tech transfer and startups with 25+ years experience, formerly at CWRU, now leading innovation through TherExel LLC.
Michael J. Haag, MS, MBA
Co-founder, Chief Executive Officer
Michael Haag is an experienced leader in technology transfer, innovation management, and start-up creation, with over 25 years of experience. Since 2013, he served as the Executive Director of Technology Management at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) until June of 2023, overseeing a Technology Transfer Office responsible for the commercialization of innovations arising from over $400 million in research annually.
During his tenure at CWRU, Michael led the re-establishment of Case Technology Ventures (CTV), later rebranded as The Spartan Fund, which he served as its Managing Director. The Spartan Fund became a vital pre-seed, evergreen venture fund designed to support early-stage, high-risk technologies from the university. Under Michael’s leadership, the Spartan Fund Catalyst Program, which provided $5,000 in consulting services to startups going through the diligence process was established. His work contributed to the growth and success of CWRU's entrepreneurial ecosystem, with over 80 start-ups launched, 10 of which were acquired and three exited through IPOs, collectively representing an exit value of more than $325 million.
In addition to his venture creation efforts, Michael secured approximately $3.5 million in commercialization grants as Principal Investigator and played an integral role in managing translational research programs, which invested over $2 million annually. His leadership in technology transfer resulted in over $40 million in total revenue for CWRU, including negotiating four of the largest up-front payments in the university’s history.
In 2023, Michael founded TherExel LLC, a technology commercialization consulting firm. This move reflects his ongoing passion for start-up creation and venture development. Throughout his career, Michael has cultivated a vast network of industry connections, including investors, entrepreneurs, and key stakeholders, which he leverages to drive innovation and partnerships. His dedication to translational research and venture creation has made him a highly respected figure in both the academic and business communities.
Michael holds an M.S. in biology from CWRU, an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix, and a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from John Carroll University. He is a member of the Licensing Executives Society and the Association of University Technology Managers.
